Update: Byelection 2024 – Summer Village of Nakamun Park

As you may be aware, the Summer Village of Nakamun Park is required to hold a byelection for the vacancy on municipal council. Following the passing of Councillor Kassian last fall, Council requested an extension in the prescribed election timeline offered under the Local Authorities Election Act in order to conduct a byelection during the spring/summer of 2024 (rather than during the winter). The purpose of this message is simply to update residents and electors on the most recent developments, and next steps.

On February 22nd, 2024, Council received the requested extension approval from Minister McIver as part of the regular council meeting agenda. This extension requires the municipality to complete the required byelection no later than May 31st, 2024.

With this extension in hand, Council has now established the key dates required to complete the byelection planning/process:

    1) Nomination Day will be Saturday April 27th, 2024, ending at 12:00noon.*

    2) Advance Voting will be held on Saturday May 18th, 2024 10:00am until 2:00pm.*

    3) Election Day will be held on Saturday May 25th, 2024 from 10:00am until 7:00pm.*

(*Location to be at the Village Shop)

Council has also authorized administration to host a Q&A on running for office for prospective candidates on April 17th, 2024, from 7:00pm until 9:00pm. A common concern among smaller municipalities is lack of interest in running for office, and we hope that providing this information session for prospective candidates will give anyone interested, but perhaps unsure, about running an opportunity to learn about the role before they filing their nomination papers.

Additional details will be provided ahead of the key dates noted above. A letter will be mailed out as part of the prescribed election notification requirements established under the Act, and a new website tab will be created with additional detail and updated reference material/forms as plans finalize over the coming weeks. In the meantime, if you have any questions please feel free to contact the administration office to discuss – 780-967-0271 or by email  at cao@svnakamun.com.
